There’s a special peace and a clean quiet beauty that accompanies a fresh blanket of snow. . . full of the wonder of winter. On a farm a quiet energy walks with that peace and beauty, always thinking of the growth to come and working forward. Winter farm tasks are many and while they move at a slightly slower pace they make spring all the sweeter. So we thought it might be helpful to give you a peek into our going-on-right-now winter tasks that will make our spring and summer tasks more manageable and our flowers straighter and stronger and prettier.
Our hoop house is almost full with late fall planted snaps, campanula, sweet peas, belles of Ireland, ammi, ranunculus, and anemone. These cool season crops are well named as they can take all the cold temps winter can hand out. I haven’t added extra layers of cover yet this season and will not unless temps dip into single digits and I think you can see how healthy things are looking. These snapdragons will likely beginning blooming in 3 short months!
And while we love all the wildlife our farm invites we’re making an all out effort this year to keep the deer, groundhogs, and rabbits grazing in the pastures and woods rather than our flower beds. So. . . we’ve put 4’chicken wire up around the hoophouse and around the field bed and 8′ deer fencing will be added this week around the dahlia/field beds. This is no small task but we believe will be worth the time and expense and grey hairs 🙂
And this is the time of year when we look back to 2024 and look forward to 2025. We saw more people visit the farm than ever before and we enjoyed the many different ways folks arrived – workshops, farm tours, CSA pick ups, u-pics, wedding pick ups, farm store, or just grabbing a custom ordered bouquet. We are often say our farm gathers the loveliest, kindest people and this past year once again was living proof.
We will be hosting many of the same events this season but will be adding a few new things just to keep us on our toes. We will always be announcing things here even before on social media so stay tuned.
Our first event of the season is our Dried Workshop. So many beautiful wreaths and wall hanging were created last January we couldn’t pass up an opportunity to play with dried materials again this year and we saved even more dried material this year than last. We’ll host the workshop at Aunt Willie’s house as it’s cleaned and ready and there’s such lovely heat there! Thursday, January 30th from 6-8 pm we’ll gather, create, visit, and celebrate winter in wonderful way. And since these are dried materials your wreath and wall hanging will last until you make something new next year! Click here for all the details and registration.
