SOLD OUT! Nature and Flat Lay Photography Workshop, Sun., Feb 19, 3 pm til dusk
$75.00
Come explore all of the farm’s February finest as we take time to relax, wander, and appreciate the often overlooked beauty of late winter and learn about flat lay photography. We’ll gather at the Homeplace, 399 Bruce Doan Rd. where friend-of-the-farm photographer Anna Hedges and I will share tips and techniques for better photography. A cell phone is perfect but film and/or DSLR cameras are welcome as well. You do not need to be an experience photographer to enjoy this workshop and all skill levels are invited. We’ll introduce you to flat lay photography which is basically an image shot directly from above – a bird’s eye view of carefully gathered and arranged objects that often tell a story. Anna and I will demo a quick flat lay to get us thinking.
Then we’ll pile in the back of the pick up truck or side by side and head out to the far corners of the fields, up to the cabin in the woods, and into falling-down buildings. All the while we’re wandering we’ll be gathering flat lay material which you can take home and also snapping nature photos of velvety mosses, cows grazing, winter skies, and the first of the daffodils and lenten roses. If it happens to be raining, bring a umbrella, but we’ve got wonderful old structures to duck in as well, each with its own story to tell.
Then back to the Homeplace where we’ll begin our flat lays. We’ll have backgrounds of quilts, pages from old books, fabrics, and foam boards in various colors available but you may choose to use the seat of the porch swing or the slate from the fireplace. A few bird’s nests, feathers, bones, dried flowers etc. that are a bit harder to find will be already be waiting for you on tables ready for use. Late afternoon light is wonderful and we’ll help you find a spot with good shadow-free diffused light inside or out.
You may try as many creations as time allows and get experience with different backgrounds and textures. Please bring items from home if you’d like to add a personal touch – old things look wonderful with winter textures. We will have handouts with photo tips, flat lays suggestions, and an introduction to an app that helps when sharing to social media.
Registration is not refundable and we will meet rain or shine. Please dress for a run down old farm and wear shoes or boots that will let you wander. Please see below for more details.
